## Caption

The Mercator projection preserves direction and navigation accuracy, which made it valuable for sailors, but it heavily distorts size and distance at higher latitudes. Areas closer to the poles become increasingly stretched, causing places like Greenland to appear far larger than they really are compared to Africa. Because of this polar stretching, even simple circular distances on Earth can appear warped and uneven on the map.
