At first glance, these artworks might seem to share nothing more than being paintings of women in hats. But look again, each one traces back to an art historical touchstone. They all take inspiration from Henri Matisse’s bold use of non-naturalistic color, inventive compositions, and his masterful “Femme au chapeau.”

Look closely and you might even spot Femme au chapeau making a subtle, surreptitious cameo 🔍
