MOYNIHAN AND CHAMPAGNE FINISH RUNNER-UP AT CIF-SS PAIRS TOURNEY: Seniors Sara Moynihan and Emma Champagne of the jserra.beachvolleyball team put the finishing touches on their decorated careers with a Division 1 runner-up finish at the CIF-SS Individual Pairs Tournament on Thursday at the Southside Pier Beach Volleyball Courts in Huntington Beach.

Moynihan and Champagne (the No. 2 seeded team in the Division) began their day of competition with a spirited quarterfinals showdown against senior teammates Skylar Noble and Presley Johnson (the No. 10 seeded duo).

Moynihan and Champagne claimed the first set 21-10, but Noble and Johnson fought back in an entertaining, high-level second set.

Moynihan and Champagne fought off three set point chances, but Noble and Johnson closed out the fourth opportunity for a 25-23 win to tie the match at 1-1.

The third and deciding set was tied three times early, but a kill from Moynihan and an subsequent ace from Champagne opened up a four-point lead that helped spur the duo to a 15-8 set triumph and match victory.

Moynihan and Champagne then defeated Redondo Union’s third-seeded pair of Sienna Castillo and Linnaea Nielsen (26-24, 21-18) in the semifinals to set up a championship battle with defending champions and the No. 1 seeded team Addison and Avery Junk also from Redondo Union.

After trailing 10-17, Moynihan and Champagne rallied back to take a 19-18 lead, but the Sea Hawks duo answered back to win the set 22-20.

The two teams battled through a high-intensity second set that was tied eight times before the Junk sister pulled out a 23-21 triumph for the title.

Despite the narrow defeat, Moynihan and Champagne became the first players in school history to advance to the individual championship round.
