#TSRHealth: Passengers on a luxury cruise are stuck in a real-life nightmare after a rare hantavirus outbreak turned deadly, according to apnews. The ship, which traveled from Argentina toward Antarctica and across the Atlantic, has now reported three deaths linked to the virus. One passenger is currently in intensive care at a South African hospital, while three others on board are showing symptoms and awaiting emergency evacuation.

There were nearly 150 passengers and crew from 23 countries on board when the outbreak began. Officials say it took almost a month from the first illness, an older man who later died, for hantavirus to be confirmed through testing.

Reports state that hantavirus is spread by rodents. People can get it through contact with infected rodents’ saliva, urine, or droppings. However, it doesn’t usually spread from person to person, but some health authorities say such transmission could occur.

The ship is currently anchored off Cape Verde, with Spain agreeing to receive it in the Canary Islands within the next few days. Until then, everyone on board is being told to stay put and monitor their health.
