Phoenix has reportedly mailed out more than 7,900 speed camera tickets since enforcement officially began in March as part of the city’s “Vision Zero” traffic safety program.

The city says over 70,000 speeding events were captured during the warning phase alone, with 17 camera systems now active across Phoenix.

But the rollout is already sparking debate online after some legal experts claimed certain mailed citations may not actually be enforceable unless drivers are personally served.

Some residents say they paid the tickets immediately to avoid possible consequences, while others say they received citations for vehicles being driven by family members or other people.

Phoenix officials say the cameras are meant to help reduce traffic deaths and dangerous speeding throughout the city.
