The country is at a threshold moment: The Supreme Court and several state legislatures have demonstrated that they are willing to override the decisions of their constituents to push their own interpretation of democracy – one that capitulates to an authoritarian agenda. 

In Tennessee and now Virginia, we’ve witnessed concerted attacks on democratic processes and our voting rights upheld by those entrusted to defend us, the people. Elected officials have manipulated district lines, rewritten election rules, and tested how far they can push our limits. If we let them, Black voters and Black communities will go without representation, our voices and concerns will be stifled, and decisions about our future will be made without any consideration for our realities and lived experiences. 

Tennessee and Virginia are only part of a broader attempt to undermine and erode our democracy so that MAGA politicians obtain ultimate power. But where does power actually reside? With us! We’ve got to remain vigilant and prepared to fight back. 

This is going to take all of us.
