ADHD is not a trend. It’s a disability.

ADHD affects millions of people daily. It’s a neurological condition that impacts executive function, time management, emotional regulation, and focus. Yet the narrative persists that it’s a fad, a joke, something comedians can laugh about. When you make fun of ADHD, you’re making fun of a disability. That’s ableist. And it needs to stop.

I was diagnosed at 24 after a decade on medication that wasn’t working. I finally managed to get a new medication in 2025 but the journey has been turbulent and my mental health has suffered in the process.

Managing ADHD in a neurotypical world, while carrying shame about your own capabilities, can be challenging. People with ADHD are often intelligent and capable, yet we live with a disabling condition that can make everyday tasks feel impossible. When people dismiss it as a trend, that shame deepens.

But here’s what I’ve learned: we are not broken. We are not lazy. We are not the punchline. With the right support, the right medication, and the right community, life with ADHD can be rich, creative, and full. The diagnosis isn’t the end of the story, it’s the beginning of finally understanding yourself, and that understanding changes everything
