The entire school will be demolished‼️😳📚

Tumbler Ridge Secondary School will be demolished and rebuilt at a new location following the devastating mass sh**ting that shook the small B.C. community earlier this year.

B.C. Premier David Eby said students, staff, and families made it clear during consultations that they could not return to the school where the tragedy happened. 

The province says a completely new secondary school will now be built on a different site, while the current building will be torn down.

On February 10, 2026, 18 year old former student Jesse Van Rootselaar allegedly klled her mother and half brother at their home before going to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and opening fire. 

Authorities say six people were klled at the school and 27 others were injured before the shooter later died by self-inflicted injury. In total, nine people died during the incident, including the shooter.

The attack became the deadliest school sh**ting in Canada since the École Polytechnique massacre and the deadliest mass shooting in the country since the 2020 Nova Scotia attacks. 

The tragedy deeply impacted the town of roughly 2,400 residents and drew grief from across Canada and beyond.

Since the attack, students have been attending classes in portable classrooms set up near the community’s elementary school while officials worked on long term plans for the future of education in Tumbler Ridge.

Many people online are saying rebuilding elsewhere is the only way the community can begin to heal after such an unimaginable tragedy. 

Others say no building can erase the trauma families, students, and survivors continue to carry every day.
