Shoutout to the Ottawa officers who went above and beyond for a young boy when they didn’t have to 🙏❤️🚲

Two Ottawa Police officers are being praised after going above and beyond for a 12 year old boy who had recently gone through a difficult situation.

“Sometimes policing is more than just responding to calls.”

Police say the young boy had reportedly been approached and intimidated by four unknown males in what was believed to be an attempted robbery. The boy safely ran home and officers attended to speak with him and his mother.

While talking with the family, officers also learned that just one week earlier, their storage locker had been broken into and the boy’s bicycle had been stolen. 

Police say there was unfortunately little evidence to move the investigation forward and replacing the bike was not financially possible for the family at the time.

After hearing the story, Constables William Darling and Justin Demers reportedly returned to their platoon and shared what happened with fellow officers. 

Members of the platoon, including sergeants and inspectors, all came together and raised enough money to buy the boy a brand new bicycle.

The officers didn’t stop there either. They also purchased a helmet, bell, reflectors, and a heavy duty bike lock to help keep the 12 year old safe and protect the new bike.

Police later surprised the boy and his mother with the gifts, with the family said to be overwhelmed with gratitude and emotion.

Many people online are calling this a refreshing and positive example of community policing and say moments like this help build trust between officers and the public. 

Others say stories like this deserve just as much attention as negative headlines involving police.
