How are the children? Later this month, United Way of Greater Atlanta will begin sharing new insights from our updated Child Well-Being Index data to answer that question.

Since launching the Index in 2017, we’ve helped Greater Atlanta weather the COVID-19 pandemic—which further exposed disparities between communities with the greatest access to opportunity and those with inequitable barriers to reaching their full potential. While pandemic relief helped many communities weather the storm, the latest data shows that more than a third of our neighborhoods continue to lack the resources and support that kids need to thrive.

In 79 of these neighborhoods, child well-being is declining, preventing us from seeing the full promise of the 77,000 children who live there. These neighborhoods are United Way of Greater Atlanta’s highest priority—and they show up in every one of our 13 counties.

Often, they’re in close proximity to those with the most access to opportunity, separated in some cases by just a few neighborhood blocks. But measured in opportunity, the distance is profound.

Data like this remind us of how far Greater Atlanta has to go before we can say, “all the children are well.” But it also arms us with the insights to retarget our efforts for the greatest impact, investing in innovative solutions like CareerReadyATL and Learning Spaces in the neighborhoods that need them most—unlocking the limitless potential of all children, and the communities they call home.

Stay tuned for our full 2023 Child Well-Being Outlook: Insights for Impact Report this summer. I hope you’ll join us as we turn these insights into action and work toward a future where every child, family and community can thrive. | 13 comments on LinkedIn
