On Monday, May 4th, Oswego State University appointed Jon Whitelaw as interim head coach for the men’s ice hockey program. Whitelaw steps into the role after serving as an assistant coach and brings a strong understanding of the program’s culture, student-athlete development, and competitive expectations.

Whitelaw, a native of Huntsville, ON, CAN, played for the Lakers from 2009-2013 having a decorated career with numerous accolades. In 110 career games, he put together 53 goals & 86 assists for 139 points, putting him tied for 28th in the Lakers’ history books. He’d be named the #SUNYAC Rookie of the Year as a freshman while also earning AHCA East Region Second Team All-American honors, All-SUNYAC First Team and the SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year in his junior season. After serving as an assistant captain his junior season, Whitelaw would wear the ‘C’ his senior year where he’d be named the Oswego State Male Student-Athlete of the Year as well as earning the prestigious SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. 

After one season of playing professionally in France, Whitelaw began his coaching career in 2014-2015 becoming an assistant coach with the Huntsville Otters of the now Provincial Junior Hockey League (PJHL). After his lone season back home, he’d shift back to New York as a graduate assistant at SUNY Cortland for the 2016-2017 season before returning to his alma mater the following season under the same title. He’d become a full-time assistant coach for the Lakers in the 2019-2020 season.
