Last night, my sister Rabianasimi was elected as a Labour Councillor in London. 

For those unfamiliar, a councillor is an elected representative for a ward of 10–20,000 residents, like an MP, but for your neighbourhood. The people who fight for your streets, your schools, your community.

But the title isn’t what makes this win extraordinary. Let me tell you what does.

This is a woman who campaigned for an entire year while working full-time as a civil servant. Raising an 18-month-old daughter. And pregnant.

Door after door. Street after street. Shopkeepers, residents, religious centres, community hubs — she showed up everywhere. Swollen feet. Pregnancy sickness. Nausea. Exhaustion that would have flattened most of us. None of it stopped her. Rain or shine, she kept going.

I’m not saying this as her sister. I’m saying it as someone who simply watched her, in awe. She is the truest definition of a superwoman I have ever witnessed. Win or lose last night, she had already earned every ounce of respect this world could offer.

And here’s what makes this victory taste even sweeter:

We arrived in the UK as a family in 1999. My parents had left Afghanistan in the 1980s, chasing their education, and later chasing safety for us. Every migrant parent is a hero, but mine sacrificed everything so their children would never see themselves as less capable, less deserving, less worthy of any seat at any table.

Last night, a daughter of refugees from Afghanistan  took her seat at that table. Elected. Chosen. By her community.

Rabia, I am so unbelievably proud of you. You carried a campaign, a child, a daughter, and a dream— and you won.

Here’s to many more wins. For her. For our family. For all of us.
