USS United States, one of the six original frigates built for a young nation finding its strength 🇺🇸⚓

Authorized under the Naval Armament Act of 1794, the frigate United States was designed by famed naval architect Joshua Humphreys — the visionary behind USS Constitution — with assistance from Capt. Thomas Truxtun.

Launched in Philadelphia on 10 May 1797 and commanded by Commodore John Barry, United States became one of the first warships built for the newly established U.S. Navy, helping define the future of American sea power.

Seized by Confederate forces at Norfolk in 1861 and later renamed CSS United States, the ship was eventually recaptured by Union forces. Deemed too damaged for further service, she was broken up in 1865.

The launch of USS United States marked the beginning of a naval legacy that continues more than two centuries later.
