A WHO official has moved to reassure the public after a cluster of hantavirus cases emerged on a cruise ship docked in the Canary Islands, saying the average person has no reason to be alarmed.⁣

Dr. Boris Pavlin, Team Lead for Field and Humanitarian Epidemiology, WHO, stressed that hantavirus is not a new virus and that it has been known for decades, with a major outbreak in the United States in 1993 and well-documented cases in Argentina and Chile.⁣

Pavlin also again stated that hantavirus “is not Covid’. ⁣

"If it were Covid, we would have seen it explode long, long ago,"Pavlin told CGTN’s Ken Browne.⁣
