Russia’s two-day unilateral ceasefire for its May 8–9 Victory Day commemorations began at midnight Friday. Within hours, both sides were accusing the other of violating it.⁣

Moscow said Ukrainian forces launched more than 200 drones overnight, with Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reporting that 27 targeted the capital region, while the Defense Ministry claimed 264 drones were destroyed nationwide. A Yaroslavl oil refinery was hit, causing a large fire; regional officials said no one was injured. Ukraine has not formally joined the Russian truce. ⁣

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian strikes continued overnight on Ukrainian positions and vowed Kyiv would respond “in kind” to defend its territory.⁣

Kyiv had called for an open-ended ceasefire starting earlier this week, while Moscow proceeded only with its own holiday window. Russia has warned that any disruption of Saturday’s Red Square parade could trigger a major strike on Kyiv and advised foreign diplomats to consider evacuating the capital.⁣

For the first time since 2007, this year’s Moscow parade will not display heavy military equipment — officially due to the threat of Ukrainian attacks.⁣

Security in Moscow has been tightened ahead of the parade, with checkpoints set up across the city and snipers and machine-gun crews deployed on Kremlin towers.⁣
