A Chinese researcher has described the excitement of discovering a new lunar mineral, changesite-(Ce), in samples returned to Earth by the Chang'e-5 mission.⁣

Changesite-(Ce) is one of three newly identified lunar minerals, alongside  magnesiochangesite-(Y) and magnesiochangesite-(Ce), discovered by a team led by the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences. ⁣

The breakthrough came unexpectedly in September last year while researchers were examining lunar samples under a scanning electron microscope.⁣
