South Carolina lawmakers are weighing a controversial proposal to redraw the state’s congressional district maps ahead of the 2026 midterm elections; an unusual move that would take place outside the standard post-census redistricting process.

Redistricting occurs once every ten years after the U.S. Census, however, the proposal would allow state leaders to revise district boundaries mid-decade.
