When we moved into our current location nearly five years ago, one of the things we were most excited about with moving to the new building was being able to take over such a historic location. Prior to us purchasing the building, it was the home of Dickerson Hardware.
The family owned and operated their small business for sixty-plus years in this location. Charlie Dickerson was a founding member of the Clayton Fire Department and local Chamber of Commerce while also being a charter member of the Clayton Rotary Club with perfect attendance for 60 years! His loving and devoted wife, Venice, was a driving force behind the success of the store. She was active in the community after retiring from her nursing career and as administrator at the local hospital. She was heavily involved in her church and despite how involved she was locally always managed to have a home cooked meal waiting on the stove for anyone who dropped by the house.
Together they opened the doors to Dickerson Hardware in 1948 and quickly became a mainstay in the local community. Their son Charles Jr. came on board to help the growing business in 1966 and worked alongside his father until 1998. Many family members stepped in to help run the business over the years and all became staples to the local customers who frequented the hardware store.
Their family has been super gracious with us and shared tons of photos, newspaper articles, and memories of their family and this building with us. They’ve even loaned us the original cash register which we now have on display in the store along with some information celebrating the legacy of small business and community they have left us. We are proud to follow behind in the footsteps of their family-run small business. Thank you for considering to shop small and giving us the privilege to share the legacy of the Dickerson family.
