"Mr. Cumbo has a way of putting things into perspective and helping you understand the man God is calling you to be."

The six 2026 Mr. Canisius finalists all had their photo taken with a faculty member of their choice during the seniors' final week of school.

Here is why Baron Nieves ’26 chose English teacher Paul Cumbo ’97:

"On the first day of our sophomore English Honors class, he showed us how much time we had already spent at Canisius and how much we had left. At that moment, you really stop and think about your life, where you have been, where you are going, and who you are becoming.

"And that is exactly what he does. He makes you stop and think, not just about school but about your life. His class was never just about English. He taught us things that went beyond it, lessons that apply to our faith, our lives, and our relationships. It was something different, and every day in that classroom felt like it mattered.

"Mr. Cumbo pushes us to be virtuous men made in the image of God. He challenges you to grow and to really become the person you are capable of being."

Here are Cumbo’s thoughts on Nieves, who is from Buffalo, attended St. Benedict School and is headed to the University at Buffalo:

"It’s been a gift to journey with Baron through this formative chapter of his path-story.

"I smile as I recall the odyssey of Socratic rigors in English 10 Honors, climbing rugged Adirondack trails on the senior Wilderness Retreat, and the honest vulnerability of Grad at Grad conversations.

"He’s elicited joy and gratitude from this graying fellow son of Canisius at every juncture, along with plenty of laughter.

"Baron’s courage, integrity, and humility are rooted deeply in a loving heart inclined to serve. Here’s a young man who embodies the ethos of Jesuit education."
