Confessions of a burnt out nurse colleague.

"I step out of a patient’s room and walk into the next patient’s care as if nothing just happened.

I help them move, sit, and sleep. I give them medicine, alleviate their physical suffering and comfort their emotional pain.

I keep doing this until the end my shift.
Most of the time I foget that I've eaten anything or drunk any water.

Later, when it is quiet, it lands.
In the car. On my way. Alone.

I replay every detail.
I ask if I missed something.
I feel it in my mind and in my body.
In my chest. In my stomach.
The one thing we can do sometimes is to cry.

My body feels neglected. My sleep is interrupted and my mind keeps wandering."

She didn’t think she could carry on anymore. She had been giving everything she had to her work, with very little acknowledgment, under huge systemic pressure, helping patients back to back, and with the weight of knowing she would have to return the next day and do it all over again.

That conversation stayed with me because I know how easy it is for people to miss what burnout can look like in real life. Sometimes it’s not loud or dramatic. Sometimes it’s someone still showing up, still doing the work, still caring deeply, while quietly reaching the edge of what they can hold.

On International Nurses Day, I’m celebrating nurses and everything they give. But it’s also important to be acknowledge the immense burnout across the profession

This may begin with one nurse’s story, but it’s not only her story. It reflects what many nurses and other health and social care professionals are living through every day while continuing to care for others.
