Saturday, the community gathered in Shreveport to honor eight children killed in a mass shooting last month. The victims included seven siblings who were reportedly shot and killed by their father, along with their cousin.

The funeral service took place at Summer Grove Baptist Church on Mother’s Day weekend. Mourners slowly walked past eight white caskets decorated with large photos of the children, bouquets of white flowers, and gold crowns as music and tributes filled the church throughout the service.

Authorities said the children’s father, #ShamarElkins, carried out the shooting using an assault-style weapon despite having a prior felony firearms conviction from 2019. Police said the violence unfolded across two homes in a Shreveport neighborhood and also left Elkins’ estranged wife, who had reportedly been seeking a divorce, and another woman injured.
