Race and sex disparities in computer access were already pronounced in the 1980s when the #homecomputer took off. 

In 1984 only 8% of U.S. households had a computer, and 15% by 1989

Even in homes with computers, boys were more likely to use them than girls. 

Having a computer in the home conferred benefits in #computerliteracy and #academicperformance.
