This Death by Chocolate trifle is a make-ahead wonder. It could not be easier to throw together, but makes for a show-stopping dessert, with layers of chocolate cake soaked in cream, rich chocolate pudding, light and fluffy whipped cream, and crunchy Skor pieces.

You can make it ahead and store it in the fridge until it’s time to eat. In this busy season I love a recipe I can tailor for how much time I have. Substitute Cool Whip for the whipped cream, make the pudding from scratch, buy a chocolate loaf cake. The options are endless and I have done them all.

This is my spin on the trifle my Grammie made, first in the summer when we visited she and my Gramps in New Brunswick, it was such a hit it appeared at most all family special occasions after.

My kiddos are just the latest generation of fans and I hope you will be too!

Ingredients
-1 chocolate cake mix, baked according to package in a 9x13 pan
-5 cups heavy whipping cream
-4 boxes chocolate pudding mix
-8 cups of milk, to make pudding
-2 tbsp of granulated sugar
-1 vanilla bean pod or 1 tsp vanilla bean paste (optional)
-4 Skor chocolate bars, chopped

To make:
Poke holes all over the chocolate cake and pour one cup of the whipping cream over the cake. Refrigerate overnight or at least 4 hours. Then cut into chunks.

Just before assembling make the pudding, adding the mix to the cold milk and whisking until thick.

Make the whipped cream using a stand mixer or beaters. Whip the four remaining cups of heavy cream with the sugar until stiff peaks form, squeezing in the goodness from the vanilla pod.

Now it’s time to layer. Into each trifle dish layer chocolate cake, pudding, skor bar, and whipped cream. Then repeat, leaving out the Skor bar until the end, sprinkling it over the whipped cream.

Refrigerate for 3 hours minimum, it’s worth it!

NOTE: if you have a very deep trifle dish, you may be able to fit all the layers in one dish. Smaller dishes are better split between two. I have also made this as individual desserts in mason jars and in a pinch used a punch bowl!
