A top San Diego Padres pitching prospect has reportedly self-deported back to Mexico after being arrested in Arizona near the border last year 😳⚾

According to court documents, 19-year-old Humberto Cruz was stopped by Border Patrol agents near Lukeville after authorities became suspicious of an SUV traveling through the area with multiple passengers inside. Investigators say Cruz later admitted he responded to a social media post offering “easy money” to transport people through Arizona.

Cruz eventually pleaded guilty to a federal misdemeanor tied to the case as part of a plea agreement that dropped a more serious charge. Reports say the agreement made deportation from the U.S. nearly certain.

The Padres originally signed Cruz out of Mexico in 2024 for a reported $750,000 bonus, and he had previously been ranked among the organization’s top pitching prospects.
