For today’s #Artist365, meet one of the artists who makes Western Avenue special Johniene Papandreas, today from Studio 461.

We sense rather than ‘see’, is at the heart of artist Johniene Papandreas’ painting.

While she occasionally works from photos or living subjects, her models are often long-dead figures from classical art she lifts from the past and reincarnates. In the process, the clues that fix them in time and place and even gender are abandoned and, as the courtship between artist and subject progresses, unexpected hidden emotional lives are revealed…to the artist and to the modern viewer.

They might begin as 17th. century French sisters who morph into emotional Siamese twins, a Franciscan monk whose eyes reveal someone struggling with the dark and light of his soul, or details from a Dutch still-life containing mysterious and sensual micro-worlds.

Oh, and brace yourself…they’re REALLY big.

The paintings are created entirely by brush in casein, an old-world paint derived from milk protein. Johniene applies the casein layer by layer, in thin glazes that bond to specially prepared muslin to slowly build visual depth and dimension. The resulting painting is softly luminous and appears to glow from within even in the dimmest of light.
