My grandfather recently passed away at 99 years old surrounded by loved ones in his home.

He lived a full life. A Navy veteran, a dentist in Roanoke for 31 years, and to many was “the singing dentist” who greeted people with a warm “Cheers!” He carried his Lebanese values of love, family, generosity, and integrity everywhere he went, along with a playful sense of humor that stayed with him until the very end.

When I turned 13, my parents asked family and role models to write me advice as I stepped into adulthood. My grandpa’s note was full of the kind of wisdom that only becomes more meaningful with time.

Family. Friendship. Faith. Work. Kindness. Giving. Perspective.

He was a collector of inspirational passages, and now I understand why. Some words are worth holding onto. Some words are worth passing along.

Grateful for his life, his wisdom, and the reminder to count my blessings without comparing them.
