17 years ago, Cobra Starship released ‘Good Girls Go Bad’ featuring Leighton Meester.

The track arrived in May 2009 as the lead single from the band’s third album, ‘Hot Mess.’ It became a massive breakout success, peaking at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and marking the first top-ten hit for both the group and the ‘Gossip Girl’ actress. To date, the single has moved over two million units and is certified double-Platinum in the United States.

Frontman Gabe Saporta was a fan of Meester’s work and reached out for a collaboration after hearing rumors she was starting a music career. He felt she was the ideal fit for the song because she was “already quite adept at portraying a princess with a nasty side.” Meester was immediately drawn to the track, later recalling, “I thought, ‘I need to get on that!’ It totally is my sound too.”

The song was written in only 15 minutes during a session with producer and former ‘American Idol’ judge Kara DioGuardi. Although the band and DioGuardi weren’t initially familiar with each other’s work, Saporta noted that “it was like magic” once they started working together. Producers Kevin Rudolf and Mike Caren, along with songwriter Jacob Kasher, also contributed to the final high-energy production.

The music video, filmed in New York City, features the band running an illegal speakeasy hidden behind a deli storefront. Meester appears as a club-goer who is eventually revealed to be an undercover agent involved in a police sting. The visual includes several references to her role as Blair Waldorf, such as a scene where she sends an “xoxo” text message.
