⚠️🌿Effective Monday, September 20, Alberta Health Services is implementing changes to Visitor/Designated Support policies in acute care sites across the province.

As per updated guidelines available, the following changes will impact doulas and birthing families:

🌿 Maternity: two (2) designated support persons can be identified and be on-site with the patient if physical distancing can be maintained.

🌿 Sites with outbreaks or on-watch situations may require additional restrictions. Doulas should check with their Zone Liaison to confirm status.

🌿 Designated Support Persons are strongly recommended by Alberta Health Services to be fully-immunized. If proof of vaccination is available to you, the DAA encourages you to store a copy on your phone or in your doula bag, along with photo identification.

🌿If you experience challenges with site access, please report these to the DAA by completed a denial of access form available online and contact your Zone Liaison directly by emailing daaliaison@gmail.com

🌿 If your client receives advance feedback from a primary care provider or acute care staff member that a second Designated Support Person will not be accommodated, please request that they file a record with AHS Patient Relations by calling 1-855-550-2555. 

⚠️ Note: these files are investigated during standard business hours; this strategy will support advanced denials, but is not appropriate for real-time, after-hours circumstances.

🌿 As always, show respect and understanding for your colleagues in perinatal care positions. They are receiving and interpreting new policy information by the hour, and are working tirelessly to support excellent patient outcomes, just as we are.

🌿 Any new guidance will be communicated to members of the doula community as soon as possible.
