$32 million in. $130 billion out.

The greatest venture trade ever made wasn’t a Silicon Valley fund. It was a 1915 Afrikaans newspaper company in Cape Town called Naspers.

In 2001 they bought 46.5% of a Hong Kong messaging app for $32M. The app was Tencent. They held the position for 25 years, through 2008, every Chinese tech crackdown, Jack Ma vanishing, the gaming bans.

At its peak, the stake was 25% of the entire JSE. They had to list Prosus in Amsterdam in 2019 just to give it room to breathe.

The argument analysts have been making since 2018: Naspers and Tencent quietly did more for ordinary South African retirements than every BEE scheme combined, because the gains flowed through PIC, GEPF, the medical aids, the unit trusts. Millions of pensioners. Not a politically connected few.

Make of that what you will.
