#TakeActionTuesday: More women athletes are choosing to start families during their career, an option that has not always been feasible. With this shift, maternal well-being must be a priority in conversations around athlete health. 

Athletes like allysonfelix and alysiamontano have spoken openly about the complications, dismissals, and gaps in care that reveal a deeper crisis. Black women, in particular, face a 53% higher risk of dying in a hospital setting during childbirth compared to white women, a stark reflection of the structural racism that gravely impacts health outcomes. 

Within sports there is a lack of investment in maternal care; this needs to change. Whether it’s contracts or policies, one message is clear: maternal health must be treated as essential to athlete’s well-being. Centering athletes' voices in research and policy is key to dismantling barriers and improving outcomes. 

Addressing gaps in maternal healthcare is a serious, life-threatening issue that requires urgent attention from us all. #TheEquityProject

1. Utilize resources from organizations like For All Mothers+ that provide tools for athletes, such as sample contract language, and work to advance policies that give women psychological safety throughout their maternal journey. 

2. Call on your favorite sports leagues to increase research and resources dedicated to athlete maternal healthcare, and to invite their athletes to be part of those conversations.
