Whether it be value, color itself, tweaking shapes or the paint consistency all can be a fun part of painting process. I’m using my staple @turnercolourworks acrylic gouache distributed by @jerrysartarama, which I encourage any painter to try. I use this brand specifically for its ease of use. I’ve found the color mixing is fast and easy and affordable. When I painted with oils you could always tell the difference between student and pro grade paint not just in the massive price gap but in how much pigment vs fillers were in the tube. Student grade, albeit cheap took more paint to get to your color mixtures than the densely pigmented pro grade. Ironically , in the end student grade will cost you more. Turner acrylic gouache has a student grade price but a pro grade pigment load, making color mixing easy. Here I’m adding details and carving out the drawing by shifting color temperature and pushing am darker values where the form turns away from the lighting. My daughter has fair skin, which she got from me (despite my deep Sicilian bloodline and her mom’s Mexican heritage), so the value range is considered “high key” meaning light values. Within a light value range you have to find contrast, and that may not mean values but also contrast of warm and cool. Here I pushed color and shape variety to make an otherwise tight value range from feeling flat. And those cute chubby cheeks she has are anything but flat.
