13 years ago today, I was diagnosed with PCOS. Or what is now more accurately being referred to as PMOS — Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome. And honestly, that name change matters.

For years, this condition was framed almost entirely around ovaries despite the fact that mine were never actually polycystic.

What I did have were all the other symptoms:
* Significant hormonal imbalances
* Metabolic struggles
* Rapid and uncontrollable weight gain
* Acne … everywhere
* And perhaps the hardest symptom, the feeling that something in my body just wasn’t working the way it was supposed to.

But for a long time, I ignored it. Or maybe more accurately, I normalized it. I assumed this was just the way my body was … the way most women’s bodies were. And when I was diagnosed at 24, the only thing I really heard my doctor say was how while getting pregnant may still be feasible, carrying to term could be difficult.

My brain translated that into “you will never have kids.”

That sentence lived inside me and haunted me for years. Which is why, looking back now, I think part of why I loved being pregnant so much was because for the first time in my life, my body felt like it worked. My hormones were doing what they were supposed to do. My body felt aligned instead of at war with itself.

And somehow, despite all the fear I carried after that diagnosis, my body carried 5 babies to term.

So if there’s one thing I want people to take away from this, it’s this…

Don’t ignore your symptoms.
Don’t convince yourself that suffering is normal just because it’s common.
And don’t stop advocating for yourself until you feel heard, acknowledged, and properly supported.

You know your body better than anyone else ever will.
