An Ebola health emergency has been declared in the Democratic Republic of Congo. What makes this outbreak different?⁣

On Sunday, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a health emergency after over 500 cases and at least 131 deaths from Ebola were reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). ⁣
⁣
The virus, which is spread by direct contact with infected bodily fluids, has plagued the DRC since it was first identified in 1976. But this iteration of the disease is different: a rarer strain, called Bundibugyo, is the center of the current outbreak, and it has no approved vaccine or treatments.⁣
⁣
The strain has already spread from where it was initially detected, in the northeastern province of Ituri, to major cities including the capital Kinshasa and the M23 rebel-held Goma, where hundreds of thousands are already displaced. ⁣
⁣
The Bundibugyo species has also been detected across the border in two Ugandan nationals, one of whom has since died. An American doctor is also confirmed to have contracted the disease whilst in the DRC, and is being evacuated to Germany for treatment. ⁣
⁣
The WHO has advised the DRC’s neighboring countries to immediately establish infection-prevention measures, including track-and-trace centers. The US has begun screening some travelers for Ebola at major international airports.⁣
