The Atlantic Forest on Brazil’s eastern coast has recorded its lowest levels of deforestation since monitoring began 40 years ago. The report, conducted by Brazilian environmental non-profit SOS Mata Atlântica, showed a 40% drop in deforestation from 2024 to 2025, falling from 143.66 to 86.58 sq km.⁣

While environmentalists have hailed the figures as a step forward for Brazil’s most threatened biome, experts warn that deforestation remains a pressing issue, with the forest retaining less than a quarter of its original cover. ⁣

A new environmental law, nicknamed the "devastation bill,” was recently passed in Brazil’s congress, and sets out to drastically weaken environmental law by removing the need for prior approval from the federal environmental agency for states to authorize deforestation.⁣

Malu Ribeiro, director of public policy at SOS Mata Atlântica, has labeled the new law as a “distortion” that risks exacerbating climate disasters. ⁣
