Israel's military said Saturday it had killed Izz al-Din al-Haddad, the head of Hamas's military wing and one of the last senior architects of the October 7, 2023 attacks. ⁣

A senior Hamas official confirmed his death to Reuters; Hamas has not made a public announcement.⁣

Haddad, 55, was struck by an Israeli airstrike on a residential building in Gaza City's Rimal neighborhood on Friday evening. ⁣

Three jets dropped 13 bombs on the site. Seven Palestinians were killed in the strikes, including three women and a child, according to local medics. ⁣

A joint funeral was held Saturday for Haddad, his wife, and his 19-year-old daughter.⁣
⁣
Known as "the Ghost of al-Qassam" for his exceptionally low profile, Haddad had survived multiple assassination attempts and carried a $750,000 bounty. ⁣

He became Hamas's overall Gaza chief and military commander in June 2025 following the killing of Mohammad Sinwar. ⁣
⁣
Netanyahu and Defense Minister Katz described him as one of the principal architects of October 7 who "held hostages in brutal captivity" and "refused to implement" US President Trump's disarmament plan for Gaza.⁣

The strike comes amid a fragile October ceasefire that has seen more than 850 Palestinians killed. Israel and Hamas remain deadlocked in talks over a post-war settlement for Gaza.⁣
