Protesters say the event should be about peace and unity and therefore cannot include a country that they say has decimated the Gaza Strip and that the United Nations has accused of commiting a genocide against Palestinians.⁣

The contest, now in its 70th year and traditionally a good-natured celebration of pop music, has become mired in the crisis over Israel's military offensive in Gaza. ⁣
⁣
Five countries – Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Iceland and Slovenia – are boycotting this year's event, making it the smallest since 2003 with 35 entries.⁣
