Across the world, millions of Palestinians and their supporters have been commemorating the 78th ‘Nakba’ - or catastrophe in Arabic. The day, remembered on May 15th, marks the expulsion of 750,000 Palestinians from their homes during the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948. ⁣

Throughout the week, demonstrations have been held in cities worldwide, with flags and banners lining the streets. In Gaza, many Palestinians held the original keys to the family homes they lost in 1948.⁣

In Vienna, Austria, a small protest was held, highlighting the tensions within the city over the participation of Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest.⁣

Israel’s contestant Noam Bettan, who was booed during a performance on Tuesday, is through to the final, which will be held on Saturday at the Wiener Stadthalle. Tightened security measures are in place as the organizers prepare for further protests.⁣

In London, UK, a major policing operation will be underway over the weekend, as two protests are to be held simultaneously: a pro-Palestinian Nakba day march, and a “Unite the Kingdom” march organized by far-right figure Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, better known as Tommy Robinson. The city’s Metropolitan Police is deploying 4,000 officers to ensure the protests remain peaceful.⁣
