Cuba’s energy minister has said that the country has absolutely no oil and diesel, as a US-led blockade continues to squeeze supply.⁣
⁣
In an interview, Vicente de la O Levy emphasised that Cuba’s energy system was in a “critical” condition, with the only energy source being “gas from our wells”.⁣
⁣
Cuba normally gets its oil supplies from Venezuela and Mexico, but the two countries have been largely cut off from sending fuel to Cuba, after President Trump threatened any countries that did so with heavy tariffs. Life in Cuba has been turned upside down, with hospitals unable to function, schools forced to close and tourism grinding to a halt. Parts of the country’s capital Havana have been plunged into darkness, with blackouts lasting up to 22 hours.⁣
⁣
This week, the US reiterated its offer of sending Cuba $100m in aid, in exchange for "meaningful reforms” to Cuba’s political system.⁣
