Anna formed a Red Cross Club at her school, samfordu, after being introduced to the opportunity by a volunteer recruiter in one of her classes.

“I saw a need for Samford to give back to a community that had poured so much into us, and I thought a Red Cross Club would be the perfect way to do that,” she said.

Anna worked tirelessly with the recruiter to grow Samford’s Red Cross Club, recruiting at least 26 members within the first three weeks. They now meet once a month to brainstorm volunteer opportunities.

One of those opportunities was part of our national Home Fire Campaign, where they partnered with the Birmingham Fire & Rescue Department. They helped install free smoke alarms in neighborhoods around Birmingham and educated families on home fire safety and disaster preparedness.

✋🏼 But, Anna’s experience with the Red Cross doesn’t stop there. She also took on an internship to serve with the local Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT), averaging up to 35 volunteer hours a week.

As a DAT intern, Anna’s days varied. One day, she would respond to home fires and help people affected by them, and another day, she would serve as the on-call duty officer, answering calls about fires and dispatching other DAT volunteers to assist at the scene.

Here are Anna's words of advice for those currently in school and interested in volunteer opportunities like her. ➡️ “My advice is just to do it – if you can volunteer two hours a week, it’s worth it. Volunteering with the Red Cross Club is one of those things where you get out of it whatever you put into it, and I feel so fulfilled at the end of the day."
