“Speech is what makes us human,” Stephen shares. Watch his remarkable journey of recovery, as he reconnects with his voice through art and goes on to earn his Master of Fine Arts.

Stephen, a physician dual-trained in neurology and psychiatry, experienced this firsthand. In December 2019, he had a stroke—ironically, as a neurologist who specialized in aphasia. He was left unable to speak, with one side of his body paralyzed.

Stroke can impact anyone—regardless of age, severity, location, or life before it.

The Stroke Monologues feature powerful stories from stroke survivors, care partners, loved ones, and healthcare professionals, highlighting how stroke transforms lives, relationships, and identity.
