## Caption

I became a photographer to give the numbers a face. Seventy percent of the world’s wildlife has disappeared since 1970. Not declined. 

Disappeared.

This is a lioness. She is not the species — she is one animal, a mother, a hunter, part of a pride that has held its territory for years. African lions have lost nearly half their population in two decades.
If you can see her, it is harder to look away.
