"It’s hard to overstate the impact Mrs. Friol has had on me. And I know that sentiment extends to every student who has had the privilege of knowing her."

The six 2026 Mr. Canisius finalists all had their photo taken with a faculty member of their choice during the seniors' final week of school.

Here is why Nicholas Scime ’26 chose technology teacher Emily Friol:

"While she’s my mentor in Xavier House, it’s no coincidence that kids from all over come to visit us each day in our Mentor Group. Sure, some come to see friends or ask for help with work, but most come for something else – to see her and be part of the environment that she creates.

"Mrs. Friol truly cares about us all. She’s there for us when we need someone to talk to, she listens when we complain (which, yes, we do often), and most importantly she’s the first person to celebrate us and our accomplishments."

Friol’s thoughts on Scime: 

"Nick’s accomplishments are remarkable, but what makes him truly special goes far beyond what can be listed on paper. He is humble, kind, and genuinely approachable in a way that draws people to him. It’s not an exaggeration to say that I have never met anyone who doesn’t like Nick.

"Students like Nick remind me why I chose this profession in the first place – he inspires me to be a better teacher, a better mentor, and a better person."

Here is an excerpt from the Mr. Canisius reflection by Scime, who is from Buffalo, attended Nardin Academy Middle School and is headed to Harvard University:

"I know it’s cliché to say 'Canisius is special,' but it is. And that’s because of the people.

"When someone asks what makes Canisius so great, I tell them it’s not just the Wilderness Retreat, the football games ... it’s not just those big, beautiful Blue Doors – it’s the people you walk through them with every day."
