"Father Frederico's commitment to his faith, and to the growth of mine, has allowed me to gain the strength to go forth and set the world on fire."

The six 2026 Mr. Canisius finalists all had their photo taken with a faculty member of their choice during the seniors' final week of school.

Here is why Elliott DeRose ’26 chose Director of Campus Ministry Fr. Chuck Frederico, S.J.:

"Of all the relationships I have built over my four years at Canisius, none has been more impactful to me than the one I share with Father Frederico. Father Fred has guided me in all areas of my life, shaping me as both a gentleman and a faithful servant to God.

"May God bless Father Fred and all those whose hearts he has touched just as much as mine."

Fr. Frederico's thoughts on DeRose:

"From the very beginning of his time at Canisius high school, Elliott has demonstrated a quiet but unmistakable depth of faith. Rapidly engaging Ignatian principles, Elliott has sought the Face of Christ daily – first in the chapel. Elliott’s actions consistently reflect a sincere desire to live what he believes.

"He approaches every responsibility with a positive attitude. His presence enriches every community he is part of, because he contributes his gift through his heart.”

Here is an excerpt from the Mr. Canisius reflection by DeRose, who is from Amherst, attended Nardin Academy Middle School and is headed to Auburn University:

"God was working on me from the first day I stepped through the Blue Doors. Father Zanoni told me: 'Elliott, you are always welcome in the house of God.'

"Since that moment, my eyes opened in ways I cannot fully explain. The most important lesson I have learned over my four years is: the true Canisius experience is working at all times to be a Man For and With Others, and God."
