“Just four years ago, in 2022 ... a deranged young man drove from Binghamton to Buffalo with only one thing in mind: To kill as many black people as he could. 

“He shot down 10 innocent men and women who were simply going about the mundane activity of buying groceries. 

“One of those victims was Geraldine Talley, the beloved mother of Mark Talley. … He’s a 2007 graduate of Canisius High School. He’s one of our brothers.”

In his homily during today’s Feast of the Ascension Mass, on the fourth anniversary of the racist mass shooting in Buffalo, Assistant to the President Fr. Richard Zanoni, S.J., relayed the story of Mark Talley ’07, who went on to start the nonprofit Agents for Advocacy.

“Our brother Mark faced evil, and he committed himself to good. He walks the walk – in an exemplary manner. Worthy of our admiration and our imitation. 

“When you come face-to-face with evil, how do you respond?” 

The CHS Black Student Union is sponsoring a raffle through Monday that will benefit the Western New York for Hope Diaper & Hygiene Drive. Members of the CHS faculty are also collecting feminine products and other hygiene products, as well as diapers, for the drive.
