Lexington’s postseason Cinderella run came up just short Wednesday night as top-seeded Gretna defeated the Minutemen 8-2 in the Class B state championship match at Morrison Stadium.

The sixth-seeded Minutemen reached the title game after pulling off two major upsets during the state tournament, but Gretna’s high-powered offense proved too much in the second half as the Dragons captured their fourth state championship in program history.

Gretna struck first early in the match when senior Elijah Fulton headed in his 17th goal of the season to give the Dragons a 1-0 advantage.

Lexington answered quickly behind Alexander Barraza-Sands, who blasted in a long-range shot for his fifth goal of the season to tie the match at 1-1 and energize the Minutemen crowd.

The Dragons regained control before halftime. After taking a 2-1 lead, Alex Zawinski converted a free kick with a perfectly placed shot on the outside edge of the net for his 12th goal of the season, giving Gretna a 3-1 advantage entering the break.

Gretna continued to apply pressure in the second half, and Fulton added another goal to help seal the victory.

“It means the world to me, especially for the senior class,” Gretna's Head Coach said after the match. “I had the pleasure of working with them and seeing them grow from freshmen to seniors. It means the world.”

Despite the loss, Lexington’s players and coaches reflected proudly on the team’s postseason run and the support from the community throughout the tournament.

“What the coaches have done with this team has been fantastic,” Gretna's coach said about Lexington. “I’m very proud of the way they performed today and how they fought us about 70 minutes of that game.”

Another Minutemen player praised the support the program received during its unexpected run to the state final.

“It’s everything,” he said. “I never doubted our support from our families, from our fans, from everybody, from our alumni. I’m sorry we couldn’t get it done.”

Lexington’s appearance in the state championship game marked one of the program’s deepest postseason runs in recent memory and capped off a memorable season for the Minutemen.
