For the first time in program history, Nebraska will host the Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships this weekend at the newly renovated Nebraska Outdoor Track facility.

All 18 Big Ten schools will compete Friday through Sunday in one of the conference’s premier championship events, bringing some of the nation’s top collegiate athletes to Lincoln.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for us to showcase our facility, our state and our city,” Nebraska head coach Justin St. Clair said. “The Big Ten is so loaded across the board. You’re looking at some of the best track and field in the NCAA, if not the world.”

Nebraska enters the weekend with strong momentum on both the men’s and women’s sides. The Husker women feature 11 athletes ranked in the top five of their events entering the championships, including conference leaders Axelina Johansson in shot put, Jana Lowka in javelin, Kelsie Belquist in the 400-meter hurdles and Rhianna Phipps in triple jump.

On the men’s side, Keyshawn Strachan leads the Big Ten in javelin after setting the Nebraska school record this season. Strachan said his focus entering the weekend is simple.

“My expectation is to go out there and win,” Strachan said. “Trusting my coach, trusting the program and trusting God.”

Lincoln East graduate Berlyn Schutz has also emerged as one of Nebraska’s breakout stars this season, setting seven school records in distance events. Competing at home in front of family and friends adds another layer of excitement for the junior.

“It’s really special to have it here,” Schutz said. “All the work we’ve put in over the years on this track — getting to compete with the best of the best at our home track means a lot.”

The championships arrive during a major sports weekend in Lincoln, with Nebraska softball simultaneously hosting an NCAA Regional at Bowlin Stadium.

“You can go from the track meet to softball and back again,” St. Clair said. “These are sports that deserve attention, and fans are going to see a lot of great athletics this weekend.”

Competition begins Friday morning and continues through Sunday.
