Is a simple paycheck enough?

In today's market, salary alone might not be enough to attract and keep top talent. You need a complete compensation package. That is where fringe benefits come in. Fringe benefits are additional offerings that contribute to a complete compensation package. In this video, we define exactly what these benefits are and how they impact your taxes.

There's 2 types of fringe benefits:

1. Statutory Benefits (Required): These are legally required by law. Common examples include workers' compensation and unemployment insurance.
2. Optional Benefits (Discretionary): These are perks you choose to offer to boost morale. They include 401(k) plans, paid time off (PTO), tuition reimbursement, and remote work arrangements.

Are they taxable? Well, not all perks are created equal in the eyes of the IRS.

• Taxable Benefits: These are treated as compensation, meaning their value is included in the employee's gross income. Examples of these include cash bonuses and gym memberships.
• Nontaxable Benefits: These are excluded from income tax like small employee discounts or public transportation benefits.

Strategically offering these benefits (whether mandatory or optional) demonstrates that you value your team's well-being, which is key to boosting productivity and retention.
