Scientists proposed that moons may themselves host smaller natural satellites called submoons, often nicknamed moonmoons. Computer simulations showed these objects could remain stable around large moons orbiting giant planets under the right conditions. Although none have been discovered yet, the idea expanded astronomers’ understanding of how layered and complex planetary systems across the universe could become over time.
