In uncontrolled diabetes, the bloodstream can contain so much glucose that the kidneys stop reabsorbing it all, causing sugar to spill directly into urine. This condition, called glycosuria, was historically one of the clearest signs of diabetes. In extreme cases, urine can contain surprisingly high glucose concentrations, revealing just how overwhelmed the body’s blood sugar regulation system has become.
