## Caption

The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression filed a letter against UC Berkeley on May 18 concerning the shutdown of a speaker event featuring Jeff Dean, Google chief scientist and Gemini lead. 

FIRE wrote a letter in response to the event, according to Haley Gluhanich, senior program counsel and member of the campus advocacy team for FIRE, to put the campus “on notice” and remind it of its responsibility to uphold the First Amendment. 

FIRE is a “nonpartisan nonprofit” dedicated to defending fundamental rights across college campuses, including freedom of expression. According to Gluhanich, FIRE first learned about the case through a news article, after which they investigated and decided to write a letter to UC Berkeley.
